About the Shim Tool
A precision tool made from grade 316 stainless steel. Use this tool as an aid to measure Ducati opening and closing valve shims on your next Ducati valve adjustment. Our shim tool is universal and is used equally well on both the opening and closing shims. In addition it also works with both dial caliper and micrometer instruments. Please note that two tools are recommended if using a micrometer. Shim tool measures exactly 5mm in total length to make calculations simple. The bottom flange measures exactly 1mm again to make the math easy. Tool is manufactured with a small hole through center to allow for perfectly flat precision surfaces that are parallel to one another. The hole also aids in safe storage of the tool. Our shim tool is not magnetic so it won't collect dirt.

Our custom designed shim tool is designed to work whether you're using a dial caliper or micrometer. Just one shim tool is required for dial caliper use while we recomment two shim tools if using a micrometer. The photos below should give a good visual explaination how the tool works with both a dial caliper and a micrometer on the opening and closing shims. How to use the tool

Closing Shim Measurement with Dial Caliper

Closing shim shown being measured using a dial caliper and one tool. Place big end of tool in top of shim. As you can see the total measurment is 11.85mm. To get the shim measurement subtract the tool length (5.00mm) from the total. So 11.85 - 5.00 = 6.85. So know we know this closing shim measures exactly 6.85mm using the dial caliper.

Closing Shim Measurement with Micrometer (two tools required)

Closing shim shown being measured with two tools and a micrometer. Place big end of tool in top of shim and small end of other tool in bottom of shim. In this example subtract the total tool length (5.00mm) and the bottom of the tool flange length (1.00mm) from the total length of the assembly. The whole assembly measures 12.85mm. So 12.85 - 5.00 - 1.00 = 6.85. So we know this closing shim measures 6.85mm using the micrometer.

Opening Shim Measurement with Dial Caliper

Opening shim shown being measured using a dial caliper and one tool. Insert small end of tool inside opening shim. As you can see the total measurment is 8.98mm. So 8.98 - 5.00 = 3.98. So we know that this opening shim measures 3.98mm using a dial caliper.

Opening Shim Measurement with Micrometer (no tool required)

Opening shim measurement with a micrometer does not require a tool.
